Juventus advance despite defeat

Juventus FC, AC Milan and AC Chievo Verona reached the Italian Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Juventus FC reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup despite losing 1-0 to Reggina Calcio in the second leg of their third-round tie in Turin today.

Lead cut
The Italian champions' 2-0 first-leg advantage was halved in the 22nd minute when Roberto Maffucci put the visitors ahead after a long ball by midfield player Ricardo Veron left him with only reserve goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti to beat.

Alderuccio dismissed
But that was not enough to overturn Juventus's two-goal cushion and when Reggina defender Riccardo Alderuccio was sent off in the 85th minute for a second yellow card, Juventus were left in control of the match.

Away goals
They now play the winners of tomorrow's tie between Sampdoria UC and AC Perugia. Juventus were joined in the last eight by AC Chievo Verona, whose goalless second-leg encounter with Piacenza FC was enough to send them through on the away-goals rule after the first leg finished 1-1 a fortnight ago.

Classy Milan
Chievo will tackle AC Milan in the last eight after Carlo Ancelotti's side thrashed Ancona FC 5-1 at the San Siro to advance 6-2 on aggregate. Former Milan striker Maurizio Ganz gave Ancona the lead in the sixth minute before Rui Costa, Jon Dahl Tomasson (2), Carlo Borriello and Leonardo struck to ease the Rossoneri through.

Vicenza through
Meanwhile, Vicenza Calcio from Serie B progressed to the quarter-finals after a dramatic 2-0 second-leg away win against top-flight Bologna FC. Vicenza had midfield player Michele Marcolini sent off in the 62nd minute but went through with strikes from Alessandro Sgrigna (88) and Stefan Schwoch (90) which sealed a 3-1 aggregate win. Vicenza, who beat last season's Italian Cup winners Parma AC in the previous round, now face AS Roma in the last eight.
