Videoton FC Fehérvár have parted company with coach Péter Várhidi after a disappointing autumn season.
'A fresh mind and a new coach'
The Székesfehérvár club announced on Saturday that the coach who once led Újpesti TE to the Hungarian title had left the club by mutual consent. "I couldn't solve the problems around the team lately," said Várhidi, who took Videoton to a 5-2 defeat against Debreceni VSC in the 2001 Hungarian Cup final. "I think that Vidi can move higher in the table with a fresh mind and a new coach. It seems that the management of the club think in the same way."
Bicskei in command
Várhidi, the seventh coach to have left a Hungarian club this season, has been replaced by former Hungarian national team coach Bertalan Bicskei, who has signed an 18-month contract with the club. "This contract means that we will discuss our position with the board of directors after the end of this season" said Bicskei.
Autumn season
Having led Kispest Honvéd FC to the Hungarian title, Bicskei was national coach from 1998 to 2001 and has worked in China in this year. As a player he was Honvéd's goalkeeper and played once for the national team. Videoton went into the winter break in Hungary in ninth place in the 12-team top flight having picked up just 15 points from their 17 games.
