Republic of Ireland round-up: Shels in pursuit

Shelbourne FC kept up the pressure on leaders Bohemian FC as they beat Derry City FC 2-0.

'Psychological advantage'
Goals shortly before half-time from Mark Roberts and Stuart Byrne moved the defending champions to within seven points of Bohemians - and they could close that gap to four at the weekend. "If we can beat St Patrick's on Friday night then we will have reduced the lead to four and all the pressure will be on them," said captain Owen Heary. "It would be a psychological advantage."

Difficult trip
Shelbourne host Saint Patrick's Athletic FC on Saturday ahead of the Dalymount Park club's difficult trip to relegation strugglers Bray Wanderers AFC next Monday.

Defeat for Derry
Monday's game was delayed by 30 minutes due to a problem with the floodlights at Tolka Park. When the match eventually started, home side Shelbourne took control and inflicted a third straight defeat on FAI Cup winners Derry, who lost defender Ruairi Boyle to a red card.
