Akratitos plump for Dumitriu

Akratitos FC have appointed Dumitru Dumitriu as their new coach after the resignation of Petros Ravoussis.

Third spell
The 57-year-old Romanian trainer has signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with the Alpha Ethniki's bottom side. Akratitos, who have won just two of their 13 league games, become Dumitriu's third Greek club after earlier spells with AEK Athens FC and Panionios GS.

'A difficult position'
Dumitriu has agreed a deal that could keep him at Akratitos until June 2004 despite initially saying that he would only stay beyond the summer if Akratitos avoided relegation. "They are in a difficult position but if I succeed in helping them avoid relegation I'll stay," he told reporters.

Shareholders meeting
The former FC Steaua Bucuresti coach stepped into the breach after his predecessor, Ravoussis, resigned on Monday along with his entire coaching staff and members of the club's board of directors, in protest at the way Akratitos are being run.

Akratitos turmoil
The turmoil at the club also resulted in the departure of six players, who were told they were no longer needed. Defenders Makis Havos, Goran Sankovic, Marian Suhancek and Stratos Garozis were shown the door along with midfield players Lefteris Velentzas and Aristidis Mangafinis.

New signings
In order to boost their survival hopes, Akratitos announced the signings of defenders Panagiotis Gitsis, on loan from Panathinaikos FC, and Panagiotis Efthymiadis, who was recently released by Panionios. Midfield player Furo Yenemi also joined from Swiss side FC Sion.
