Hearts humbled by Falkirk

Members

Heart of Midlothian FC are out of the Scottish Cup, but Rangers FC and Celtic FC both secured 3-0 wins.

Scottish Premier League side Heart of Midlothian FC suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at first division leaders Falkirk FC in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

Comprehensive win
Hearts, who won the competition in 1998, were well beaten at Brockville Park, as the game was all over by the half-hour mark. Trinidadian striker Collin Samuel scored a hat-trick inside the opening 31 minutes, with strike partner Owen Coyle also on target as Ian McCall's side sealed their place in the last 16 in style.

Big two through
Rangers FC and Glasgow neighbours Celtic FC both secured comfortable 3-0 wins against lower division opposition. Saint Mirren FC performed creditably against champions Celtic at Celtic Park, with the match goalless at half-time. However, Henrik Larsson broke the deadlock for last season’s finalists’ two minutes after the interval and added a second ten minutes later, before a third from Mohamed Sylla completed the win.

Fine display
Holders Rangers won 3-0 at Arbroath FC, with captain Barry Ferguson opening the scoring after 27 minutes and Craig Moore doubling the lead before half-time. Shota Arveladze rounded off a polished performance from Rangers with a third goal in the second half.

Lower-division opponents
Both Glasgow clubs will face further lower division opposition in the next round, with Celtic at home to either Airdrie United FC or Saint Johnstone FC, while Rangers will travel to Ayr United FC.

Tricky tie
Motherwell FC booked their place in the fourth round with a hard-fought 1-0 away win at Kilmarnock FC. Scotland international James McFadden scored from the penalty spot after 35 minutes to secure a narrow victory. Meanwhile, another all-Premier League game ended with Hibernian FC winning 3-2 at Dundee United FC thanks to a hat-trick from midfield player Grant Brebner.

Aberdeen frustrated
Elsewhere, Dundee FC proved too strong for Partick Thistle FC, winning 2-0 away thanks to goals in each from Georgi Nemsadze and Gavin Rae. Livingston FC and Dunfermline Athletic FC drew 1-1, while Aberdeen FC were held to a 0-0 draw at first division Queen of the South FC, for whom former international goalkeeper Andy Goram was in fine form on his 750th career appearance.
