Under investigation
Joan Dubaere, the liquidator who has been assessing the financial state of the Belgian first division club, has confirmed that they have enough money to cover players' salaries, insurance, equipment, and other costs for the remainder of the campaign.
Future uncertain
Mechelen, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners in 1988, sit second from bottom of the Eerste Klasse and face relegation to the third division in the summer as their debts mean they are virtually certain to lose their pro-licence for next season.
Could lose licence
Clubs in the first and second division need the licence to retain their status and the deadline for acquiring this is the end of February yet Mechelen's financial problems give them little chance of meeting the required criteria.
