SBV Vitesse's Romanian international defender Stefan Nanu has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

Serious injury
The 34-year-old left-back spent just over three seasons in Arnhem following his transfer from FC Rapid Bucuresti in July 1999 and his contract was due to expire at the end of the 2002/03 season. However, Nanu suffered a serious knee ligament injury last summer and has played no part in coach Mike Snoei's first-team plans since.

Universitatea interest
The Filias-born player made 62 appearances for Vitesse, scoring one goal in the Eredivisie, and his availability has already alerted Romanian club FC Universitatea Craiova. Nanu contacted Universitatea and stated his intention to end his career in his hometown of Craiova and coach Sorin Cartu reacted by saying: "I would be glad to work with Nanu. He is a well experienced professional and he would be able to help us a lot".

Seven caps
Universitatea's main investor and shareholder, Dinel Staicu, has also expressed his willingness to sign Nanu and a deal is likely to be worked out over the next week. Nanu began his career in Craiova with Electroputere Craiova, before spells with FC Farul Constanta and Rapid between 1995 and 2000. As an international, Nanu has represented Romania on seven occasions.
