Sporting Oscars
Vicente del Bosque's side face competition from Brazil's FIFA World Cup-winning squad and three other nominees for the team prize at the 'sporting Oscars' which will take place in Monaco in May.
Team section
The Laureus Awards honour the world's best sportsmen and women for their achievements across all disciplines and countries. Accordingly, Madrid are also up against Canada's Olympic ice hockey champions, Europe's Ryder Cup winners and Formula One's Ferrari in the team section.
Ronaldo named
Meanwhile, Madrid striker Ronaldo has been nominated for the men's individual award after scoring eight goals for Brazil at the World Cup in Korea/Japan. Other nominees for the title include golfer Tiger Woods and Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.
Everton's pride
European football is also represented in the best newcomer category, with Everton FC striker Wayne Rooney among a group of five young sportsmen and women chosen. Rooney became England's youngest ever international when he played against Australia last month.
Star jury
The winners will be selected by a group of 41 sports personalities, including former Germany coach Franz Beckenbauer, and announced at the fourth awards ceremony in Monte Carlo on 20 May.
Sport for Good
As well as honouring sporting distinction, the World Sports Awards have an altruistic purpose, promoting the Sport for Good Foundation, a charitable body which seeks to "to fund and promote the use of sport as a conduit for social change throughout the world". The foundation finances projects aimed at using sport and education to tackle social problems.
