Season climax The decision was confirmed on Monday and brought an end to speculation about the possible venue for the climactic match of the 2002/03 Spanish season. The Martínez Valero stadium, which was built in 1976 and has a 38,740 capacity, recently underwent a €3m facelift. The final, between First Division sides RCD Mallorca and RC Recreativo de Huelva, will be played on 28 June.
World Cup venue Elche, a venue for the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals, has hosted Spanish international matches, the last being a UEFA European Championship qualifier against F.Y.R. Macedonia in November 1995. Elche is situated on Spain's east coast, south of Alicante.
