Farum face uncertain future

The Danish Football Association has revoked Farum's licence to sign new players.

The Danish Football Association (DBU) has revoked Superligaen side Farum's licence to sign new players following further revelations of the club's financial instability.

Fatal statement
The decision was taken Tuesday evening and was based on statements made by the club secretary, Claus Schreiber, who testified that Farum had been unable to comply with Danish league regulations regarding the proportion of expenditure spent on player wages.

Crucial decision
This is the first time that the DBU has taken such a step primarily based on reports in the press. "It's true that this is something that we haven't done before but this is a political decision to be more active and to anticipate a negative development," said chairman Peter Iversen. "We have stepped in to ensure that Farum and the rest of the system doesn't get into a situation where they can't fulfil agreements."

Appeal launched
Farum have already appealed against the decision, and the DBU board will hear their petition on 15 March. "[The] DBU are only guessing," said Schreiber. "I should just have kept my mouth shut and then we wouldn't have had all these problems." The decision comes only days before Farum launch a new initiative aimed at easing the financial difficulties which the club have faced.
