Broken foot ends Schaessens' season

Marc Schaessens has fractured his foot in six places, ruling him out of K. Lierse SK's bid for a European spot.

Serious injury
The influential midfield player sustained the injury in a challenge with R. Charleroi SC's Sierra Leonean international defender Ibrahim Kargbo. He underwent surgery on Monday after it was revealed that the foot had been fractured in six places.

Schaessen optimistic
However, Schaessen remained optimistic that he would make a full recovery from the injury, saying: "I will come back next season, for sure, and play European football with the club. I am sure that [Lierse coach] Emilio Ferrera will find something in order to keep our momentum going and to help the team without me."

Unbeaten run
The experienced 34-year-old's absence will be a significant loss for Lierse, who currently lie in fourth place in the Belgian First Division, a single point behind second-placed RSC Anderlecht. They are strong contenders for a place in next season's UEFA Champions League. Lierse are unbeaten since the turn of the year, having taken 23 points from a possible 27.
