ESM Golden Shoe: Bundesliga trio continue ascent

Members

Three German-based players closed in on the top ten by scoring in the 1. Bundesliga at the weekend.

With none of the top ten contenders in the ESM Golden Shoe rankings scoring at the weekend, three German-based players closed in by registering in the 1. Bundesliga.

Inspirational Elber
Ailton joined KRC Genk striker Wesley Sonck and Alan Shearer of Newcastle United FC in eleventh spot, climbing from 13th, after striking his 15th goal of the season to set SV Werder Bremen on their way to a 2-0 victory against VfL Bochum 1848. Another Brazilian, FC Bayern München forward Giovane Elber, inspired his side to a 3-0 success against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday.

Kuranyi on target
Elber was the scourge of Leverkusen last week. After scoring twice in a 3-1 German Cup win against the BayArena side, he repeated that feat in the league with goals in the 22nd and 76th minutes to keep Bayern well on course for a domestic double. Elber is in 14th place in the standings, one goal clear of VfB Stuttgart's Kevin Kuranyi. The forward put his side ahead against Hamburger SV but failed to add to that tally as the visitors made it 1-1.

Big climbs
Richard Nuñez was a notable climber in the standings, rising 20 places to 19th with two goals for Grasshopper-Club in a 3-1 victory at FC Wil 1900 on Saturday. As was the Feyenoord striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, who moved from 60th to 24th by scoring twice in a 6-2 Rotterdam derby victory against SC Excelsior.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
