Vieira injury hits Arsenal hopes

Members

Arsenal FC have lost injured Patrick Vieira until next month after the draw against title rivals Manchester United FC.

Tests today
The France midfield player limped out of the action in the 34th minute at Highbury last night and initially feared he could miss the rest of the season, including the FA Cup final on 17 May. However, tests have shown he should be back in a fortnight. "Patrick will definitely be out for two weeks but it is not necessarily the end of his season," Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger told the club's official website.

Complete rest
Wenger added: "His knee is not as bad as we first thought but the doctors have advised him to take a complete rest for two weeks because his knee is inflamed." Vieira will definitely sit out Saturday's match at Middlesbrough FC and the game at Bolton Wanderers on 26 April. The north London club will hope he will be in contention, however, for the home match against Leeds United AFC on 4 May.

Campbell faces ban
Aside from the worries over Vieira, the match has left Wenger with other headaches going into the climax of the season. Defender Sol Campbell faces a four-game ban after receiving a red card for elbowing Ole Gunnar Solksjær - ruling him out of the FA Cup final against Southampton FC and three Premiership games. Wenger said today the club would appeal the decision, claiming the incident was "obviously accidental".

'It can all change'
Wenger had earlier stressed that the championship was still within his side's grasp. "I cannot say that anybody is in the driving seat," he said. "We have a big game at Middlesbrough and we go from game to game because it can all change so quickly. The only way to win it is to give your all for each game."

Pleased with point
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was the more satisfied man after the result which left his team three points clear with four games left to play, starting with Blackburn Rovers FC at home on Saturday. Arsenal have five games remaining. "I think it's going to go to the wire," said Sir Alex. "You've seen two great teams and our boys have got the momentum now. I'm just sorry we didn't weather their storm. Arsenal have scored more goals than us - we have to do something about it. We've got four games left and they are all tough."
