Azerbaijan is poised for a new football season beginning on 20 April and running as a summer league after a long-standing wrangle was resolved.

All sides involved
Fatulla Huseynov, vice-president of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA), announced the news after he organised a meeting involving all the clubs. The session took place outside of the AFFA but Huseynov said the meeting "should not be considered as an attempt to discharge of authority the lawfully elected president Fuad Musaev".

High hopes
The news has been greeted positively. Another of AFFA's vice-presidents, Togrul Hajiyev, said it would be a good chance for a bright future. "We should have started the organization of our championship in the 'spring-autumn' system a long time ago. It will have a positive effect on our football." He added it was "time to stick to this new system" and hoped the championship would be based on an eight-club format.
