Article body
Most of the main contenders for the ESM Golden Shoe strengthened their claims for the title on a good week for goalscorers.
Vieri woe
Indeed the only man in the top nine not to score was long-time Golden Shoe leader Christian Vieri - whose weekend was considerably soured by being sent off in Internazionale FC's 1-0 Serie A win at Brescia Calcio.
Two-goal burst
RC Deportivo La Coruña's Roy Makaay joined Vieri at the summit of the standings after his two-goal haul against Sevilla FC. Meanwhile, in England, Thierry Henry struck three times in two games for Arsenal FC, James Beattie claimed another goal for Southampton FC and Ruud van Nistelroooij scored twice in as many games to keep up the chase on the joint leaders.
Pauleta hat-trick
Pauleta hit a hat-trick for FC Girondins de Bordeaux against AC Ajaccio to move up to sixth place from eleventh last week. Mateja Kezman of PSV Eindhoven, Henrik Larsson of Celtic FC and Shabani Nonda of AS Monaco Fc were also all on target.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
