ESM Golden Shoe: Makaay makes his mark

Members

RC Deportivo La Coruña forward Roy Makaay scored twice to move into second place behind Christian Vieri.

Vieri blank
The Dutch striker was the key man in Deportivo's 4-2 victory against FC Barcelona 4-2 at Camp Nou. The goals helped Deportivo cut Real Madrid CF's advantage at the top of the Primera División to three points. With Internazionale FC forward Christian Vieri failing to find the net in the Milan derby on the same night, Makaay is now just four points, or two goals, behind in the race to be crowned Europe's top marksman

Real deal
Elsewhere in Spain, it was a good weekend for Real Sociedad's front two of Darko Kovacevic and Nihat Kahveci. Both were on target in last night's 4-2 victory against Real Madrid CF, with Kovacevic moving to eleventh after his double strike.

Still scoring
Among the other leading contenders, there was a goal apiece for Celtic FC's Henrik Larsson, PSV Eindhoven's Mateja Kezman and Shabani Nonda of AS Monaco FC. Of the three English-based players in the top ten only Ruud van Nistelrooij, of Manchester United FC, found the target with James Beattie and Thierry Henry on FA Cup duty for Southampton FC and Arsenal FC.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
