Former Eintracht Frankfurt striker Fred Schaub has been killed in a car crash at the age of 42.

Car accident
Schaub, who had been working with the Under-17s at Austrian side VfB Admira Wacker Mödling, was travelling from Berlin to Frankfurt when his car was involved in a collision with a truck near Fulda. The former footballer died instantly, but the accident has also left his eight-year-old son critically injured.

Famous goal
The striker is most famous for the goal that saw Eintracht win the 1980 UEFA Cup final on the away goals rule against Bundesliga rivals VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. Trailing 3-2 from the first leg in Mönchengladbach, substitute Schaub scored with nine minutes remaining at the Waldstadion to win the club their only major European honour to date.

'Eintracht owe him a lot'
"We are deeply shocked about the death of our former Bundesliga professional, to whom we owe our greatest ever triumph," read a statement on the official Eintracht website. "It is unbelievable," added his devastated former team-mate Karl-Heinz Köbel. "Eintracht owe him a lot."

German career
From Eintracht, Schaub moved on to SpVgg Fürth, where he spent three seasons before briefly returning to the German top flight with BV Borussia Dortmund during the 1983/84 season. He subsequently joined Hannover 96, winning promotion to the top flight in his first season and spending two further campaigns in the top division before moving on to second division SC Freiburg.

Off to Austria
After two seasons at Freiburg, Schaub crossed the border into Austria to join Admira at the start of the 1988/89 season. He was to spend the final years of his playing career at the club, enjoying a final European campaign in 1989/90 as his new side progressed to the third round of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
