Irish Premier Division champions Bohemians FC began the new season with a 1-0 victory against University College Dublin FC on Friday evening.

Crowe opens his account
The only goal of the game came from Republic Of Ireland international Glenn Crowe, returning from injury, after 35 minutes. Last season’s top scorer burst on to a pass from strike partner Paul Keegan before placing the ball past UCD goalkeeper Patrick Jennings.

Cork frustrated
Meanwhile, Cork City FC were held to a 0-0 draw at home by St Patrick’s Athletic FC, with the away side going closest to breaking the deadlock but Barry Prenderville’s effort just before half-time was cleared off the line.

Strong start for Shelbourne
Promoted Waterford United FC suffered a heavy 4-0 home defeat at the hand’s of last season’s runners-up Shelbourne FC, who took the lead after 18 minutes with a David Crawley penalty. A defensive misunderstanding allowed Stephen Geogeghan to double the advantage 14 minutes later, before new signing Jason Byrne scored twice for his new club.

Exciting game
Longford Town FC also made an excellent start to the new campaign with a 3-2 win at Derry City FC. Eamonn Doherty put the home side ahead after three minutes, but goals from Barry Ferguson, Eric Lavine and Alan Kirby within 17 minutes turned the match in Longford’s favour. Derry’s Gary Beckett was sent off after 78 minutes, although the home side did give themselves late hope through a Gareth McGlynn strike two minutes from time.

Goalless draw
In the weekend’s other game, Shamrock Rovers FC were held to a scoreless draw at home by Drogheda United FC.
