Wisla Plock completed a surprise 1-0 away win at Wisla Kraków in the Polish Cup final first leg.

Wisla Plock completed a surprise 1-0 away victory over holders Wisla Kraków to take the initiative after the Polish Cup final first leg.

Strong favourites
Despite being strong favourites to retain the trophy, Kraków disappointed their home support after falling to a Ireneusz Jelen strike in the 16th minute. Dariusz Romuzga ended a superb individual run from the centre of midfield with clever pass to Jelen, who gave the visitors the lead with ease.

Ekwueme impressive
Miroslaw Szymkowiak hit the crossbar from 30 metres in the opening stages, but Plock soon stamped their authority on the match and frustrated the current Ekstraklassa leaders. Plock controlled the midfield areas, with Nigerian Emmanuel Ekwueme having an outstanding match.

'We did our best'
Despite hailing his side's performances during the game, Dariusz Janowski, Plock's assistant coach, had reservations regarding the second leg in Plock on 14 May. "We did our best," he said. "But it will be the second leg that will decide the destination of the cup."

'Need our balance back'
Grazvydas Mikulenas and Jelen were denied by Kraków goalkeeper Adam Piekutowski late on, leaving the home side's coach Henryk Kasperczak to reflect: "We have played two matches a week recently. We need to get our balance back, have few players return from injury and it all should look better."
