ESM Golden Shoe: Nonda leaves it too late

Shabani Nonda finished as France's leading scorer but his tally was not enough for glory in the European race.

Shabani Nonda scored a hat-trick at the weekend to finish as the leading scorer in Ligue 1, but his final 26-goal tally was not enough for the AS Monaco FC striker to prize his way into the running for the ESM Golden Shoe.

Third place
Nonda struck three times as Monaco beat ES Troyes Aube Champagne 6-0 on the last day of Ligue 1 to secure a place in next season's UEFA Champions League group stage. It moved him up to third but Mateja Kezman of PSV Eindhoven remains the only realistic challenger to leader Roy Makaay.

One goal needed
While Makaay had another barren weekend as RC Deportivo La Coruña lost 3-0 to RC Celta de Vigo, Kezman scored from the penalty spot as PSV Eindhoven moved within touching distance of the Dutch title with a 2-0 victory against FC Utrecht. Kezman now has one more match to try and overhaul Makaay. One goal would take him level, two would give him the outright lead. However, Makaay has three matches left to extend his advantage.

Level in Germany
Elsewhere, Giovane Elber failed to find the net on the last day of the Bundesliga season which means the FC Bayern München striker had to share the leading scorers' prize with Thomas Christiansen after the VfL Bochum 1848 forward scored in the 4-2 win at TSV 1860 München.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
