Borel backed by Bremen

SV Werder Bremen have secured goalkeeper Pascal Borel on a new three-year contract.

Welcome reward
The 24-year-old will now be with the Weserstadion club until 30 June 2006, a welcome reward for a good run of form that has seen him involved with the German national squad's B side, known as Team 2006. "This is a logical continuation of the good co-operation with Pascal," said Bremen managing director Klaus Allofs.

UEFA Cup hope
He added: "After a difficult start to the season, Pascal has established himself and has certainly contributed to our current positive record." With two games to go in Germany, Bremen are targeting a UEFA Cup spot with just two points separating them from fifth-placed Hertha BSC Berlin. Their next match is at home against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday.

'Feel at home'
Borel joined Bremen in the 1998/99 season from second division club SV Waldhof Mannheim and played for four years in Bremen's third division reserve team. However, he earned his chance this season and has now figured in 29 Bundesliga matches. "In terms of football, Werder is an interesting place," said Borel. "I feel at home in Bremen after five years and I am looking to the future with optimism."

Still looking
However, Bremen are still on the hunt for another goalkeeper to keep Borel on his toes. Coach Thomas Schaaf said: "Pascal knows that we want to sign another goalkeeper, so he has to confirm his good performances. He still can improve."
