Referee caught using video evidence

Members

Valentin Ivanov has been banned for six weeks for using video evidence during a Russian Cup semi-final.

Decision reversed
Rostov's Essa Kanyenda put the ball into the Anzhi net midway through the second half using his hand but Ivanov at first allowed the 'goal'. Altercations broke out on the pitch between opposing players before Ivanov reversed his decision. The game was delayed for 20 minutes. Upon its resumption Rostov, through a legitimate Kanyenda goal, won the match.

Newspaper picture
The refereeing body supported Ivanov's claims that he had not looked at a replay. However, a leading Russian newspaper printed a photograph of the referee, who took charge of this season's UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg between AC Milan and Internazionale FC, viewing the 'goal' on the sidelines.

Second ban of the season
The Football Union of Russia have banned Ivanov until 11 July but reserve the right to increase the ban, for up to a season, should they see fit. It is Ivanov's second suspension of the campaign after he was stood down for making two mistakes in a Premier League match which contributed to a PFC CSKA Moskva victory over FC Spartak Moskva.

Letter of thanks
Just this week, Milan sent Ivanov a letter congratulating him on his "flawless" performance in the Champions League encounter.
