Article body
Michael Ballack scored twice inside the first ten minutes as FC Bayern München completed a league and cup double by defeating 1. FC Kaiserslautern 3-1 in the DFB-Pokal final.
Ideal start
Bayern secured their second double in four seasons with a relatively straightforward win, taking the lead in the third minute as a free-kick from England international midfield player Owen Hargreaves was headed into the net by Ballack to give his side the perfect start.
Ballack again
The same two player combined to double Bayern's advantage two minutes later, as Hargreaves was fouled inside the Kaiserslautern penalty area and Ballack made no mistake from the spot.
Pizarro on target
The early goals enabled Bayern to take control of the game, before Ballack then created a third goal for Claudio Pizarro five minutes into the second half and the Peruvian striker placed the ball beyond Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Tim Wiese to virtually seal the result.
Late consolation
Kaiserlautern midfield player Marian Hristov was dismissed 12 minutes from time for a tackle on Bayern’s Brazilian forward Giovane Elber, although Ballack's international team-mate Miroslav Klose pulled a goal back two minutes later, but Bayern held on to take the trophy.
Bayern dominance
The victory marked Bayern's eleventh Cup victory and followed their 18th league title, with Ottmar Hitzfeld's side finishing 16 points clear at the top of the 1. Bundesliga. Bayern have now completed the double on four occasions, with the previous triumphs coming in 1969, 1986 and 2000.
