ESM Golden Shoe: Makaay moves clear

Roy Makaay is the favourite to win the award following a weekend hat-trick for RC Deportivo La Coruña.

Roy Makaay is the favourite to win the ESM Golden Shoe award following a weekend hat-trick in RC Deportivo La Coruña's 5-0 victory against RC Recreativo de Huelva.

Opening penalty
The Dutchman scored with a 32nd-minute penalty before adding his second five minutes later. Makaay's 27th goal of the season came on the hour to help Deportivo move within a point of the Primera División leaders Real Madrid CF, for whom Ronaldo scored in a 5-1 home thrashing by RCD Mallorca to climb to joint-16th in the standings.

Leading marksman
The Brazilian is ten goals behind Makaay, though, in the race to finish as Europe's leading marksman. With six games remaining in Spain, Makaay is three goals ahead of Internazionale FC's Christian Vieri and Ruud van Nistelrooij of Manchester United FC. There are three league rounds to be played in Italy, and just one in England.

Three for Van Nistelrooij
Van Nistelrooij was the most significant mover in this week's table after his hat-trick helped United defeat Charlton Athletic FC 4-1 and, following Arsenal FC's 3-2 home loss to Leeds United AFC on Sunday, reclaim the Premiership title. The Dutchman climbed from sixth to joint-second with his 22nd, 23rd and 24th league goals of a season which has also brought him 19 further goals in other competitions.

One more added
Finally, Vfl Bochum 1848 striker Thomas Christiansen has been awarded another goal after he was credited with the equaliser in last month's Bundesliga match with 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The strike had originally been recorded as a Hany Ramzy own goal. Christiansen is now on 18 goals for the season, two ahead of FC Bayern Munchen's Giovane Elber and SV Werder Bremen's Ailton.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
