SBV Vitesse midfield player Jan van Halst has retired after his club secured their Eredivisie status with a 2-0 win at home to Willem II.

'Getting too old'
"I am getting too old," said the 34-year-old, who still had a year on his contract to run. "I have had too many injuries this season. I think I have pulled the maximum amount out of my career."

'Double' winner
Van Halst began playing professionally in 1988 at FC Utrecht, going on to play for FC Wageningen, SC Fortuna Sittard and FC Twente. He arrived at AFC Ajax from Twente in the summer of 2001, yet fell out of favour during Co Adriaanse's reign.

Career reignited
His career at the Amsterdam ArenA was reignited under Ronald Koeman and Van Halst played a prominent role as Ajax claimed both the Eredivise and Dutch Cup in 2001/02. However, he moved to Vitesse in January following a lack of first-team opportunities.
