Wales round-up: Promotion issue undecided

Ups and downs
The two bottom clubs, Llanelli FC and Welshpool Town AFC, went down and should be replaced by CPD Porthmadog, winners of the Cymru Alliance, and AFC Neath, who finished second in the Welsh League Division One.

Grounds for hope
Neath have a chance of promotion because Division One champions Bettws FC do not have the facilities to host top-flight football. Neath, whose own ground is also deemed unacceptable, could take their place provided their plan to ground-share with Port Talbot Town FC gains approval.

League rules
Relegated Welshpool are monitoring the situation. The border team are casting doubt over a league rule which says two clubs must go down regardless of the number promoted. This is likely to be discussed at the Welsh Premiership's AGM on 7 June. Porthmadog's stadium has been inspected and cleared by the league authorities.

Fair play
Meanwhile, Bangor City FC, who face Romanians FC Ceahlaul Pietra Neamt in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, have lifted the Welsh Premiership fair play award for the second time. Bangor finished third in the division.

Signing on
Elsewhere, a number of academy players have been handed professional contracts by their clubs: Iestyn Thomas (Aberystwyth Town FC); Jamie Phillips (Afan Lido FC); Lance Williams (Caernarfon Town FC); Ryan Francom and Lee Evans (Port Talbot). In the English third division, Swansea City FC have signed midfield player Leon Britton on a free transfer from West Ham United FC.
