Article body
Former SL Benfica fitness coach José Gomes has been unveiled as the new coach of Portuguese SuperLiga club FC Paços de Ferreira.
One-year contract
The 33-year-old Gomes has signed a one-year contract which will see him take on the role of head coach for the first time. He replaces José Mota, who recently announced that he was leaving the club after more than three years in charge. As well as this season's sixth-placed finish - the best in the club's history - Mota's spell at the club was notable for guiding them back to the top flight and securing eighth and ninth-placed finishes.
Chairman comments
"José Gomes is my choice [and] he will stay until the end of next season no matter what happens," said club chairman Hernani Silva. "I only ask for work, honesty and [for him] to keep [the club] in the first division."
'Courage and ambition'
Gomes himself said: "I am prepared to take this challenge with courage and ambition. Mota has done an excellent job. They finished this year in sixth place, it will be very hard to do the same."
Former jobs
As well as his spell at Benfica, Gomes is also a former fitness coach at Paços de Ferreira. As head coach he will be assisted by Fernando Chalana, a former assistant coach at Benfica.
