BV Borussia Dortmund legend Alfred Preissler died at the age of 82 in his home town of Duisburg on Tuesday.
Twice champion
Preissler belonged to the legendary Dortmund team which won the German championship twice in a row in 1956 and 1957. In 294 games for Dortmund, he scored 175 goals. The striker was a runner-up in the championship with SC Preussen Münster in 1949 and also played for Rot-Weiss Oberhausen.
Two caps
The former Dortmund captain last played for the club in a derby game against arch-rivals FC Schalke 04 on 20 September 1959. His farewell was marked by an impressive 5-0 win. Preissler was capped twice by his country in matches against Austria and the Republic of Ireland in 1951.
Success as coach
"Addi Preissler was vital to the history of Borussia Dortmund," said club chairman Dr Gerd Niebaum. "He was not only a great football player, but also a wonderful person." As a coach Preissler gained promotion to the Bundesliga with Oberhausen in 1969.
