Middlesbrough FC have suffered a setback with the news that Italian striker Massimo Maccarone will miss the start of the English Premiership season because of an ankle injury.

The 23-year-old was hurt when he fell awkwardly in a friendly win over third division side Hull City FC on Saturday. "He's had preliminary scans on the ankle," Middlsbrough coach Steve McClaren told the club's website. "They have not revealed the full extent of the injury but he's been put in plaster for a week to allow the ankle to settle down."
Albacete signing
Spanish top-flight newcomers Albacete Balompié have signed Argentinian forward Gabriel Amato, after he ended his contract with Segunda División side Levante UD. Amato, formerly of RCD Mallorca and Rangers FC, expressed his delight at returning to "the best league in the world".
Gurenko contract cancelled
Parma AC have cancelled the contract of 30-year-old defender Sergej Gurenko. The Belarus captain spent last season on loan at Piacenza Calcio and has been in Italy since 1999 when he joined AS Roma from FC Lokomotiv Moskva.
