England round-up: Henry seals Arsenal victory

Arsenal FC went top of the English Premiership on Wednesday on goal difference.

Arsenal FC sneaked to the top of the English Premiership on goal difference on Wednesday while champions Manchester United FC laboured to a narrow 1-0 win against newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Full marks
Arsenal, who defeated Aston Villa FC 2-0, and United are the only sides to have won their first three games of the season. The London outfit have scored eight times, once more than Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges.

Dominant best
Arsène Wenger’s team, meanwhile, were at their dominant best in the early stages at Highbury and Villa, who have yet to win this season, did well to hold on until 12 minutes into the second half when centre-back Sol Campbell headed in following a corner. French international striker Thierry Henry doubled the lead in injury time.

New boys
United, fielding a new-look midfield including Brazilian debutant Kleberson and Cristiano Ronaldo, took a tenth-minute lead against Wolves thanks to a header from a corner by defender John O'Shea, his first goal for the club. The visitors stuck to their task manfully but Senegalese striker Henri Camara was unable to make the most of several good chances.

Liverpool struggle
Liverpool FC's disappointing start to the season continued after a 0-0 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur FC. The Anfield team have two points from three games, scoring just once - a twice-taken penalty by England striker Michael Owen in their opening-day defeat by Chelsea FC.
