RSC Anderlecht kept up their early season form and Club Brugge KV won the derby match in Bruges.
Article body
RSC Anderlecht continued their early season form in the Belgian First Division at the weekend courtesy of a 3-1 defeat of KAA Gent.
Impressive again
Without Serbian striker Nemad Jestrovic, who could be out for at least two months due to a leg injury, the Brussels team carried on from where they left off last week against R. Antwerp FC.
Second-half style
Swedish midfield player Christian Wilhelmsen opened the scoring after four minutes, although Steven Ribus levelled for the home side on the half hour. Anderlecht, however, proved considerably stronger after the break, clinching victory with goals from Walter Baseggio and Aruna Dindane.
Genk bounce back
KRC Genk, who were defeated 1-0 in their opening game by reigning champions Club Brugge KV, managed a 2-0 win at home against R. Charleroi SC with Cédric Roussel and Gambian Soley Seyfo on target.
Big win
The widest margin of victory was achieved by K. Sint Truidense VV, who overcame KSK Beveren 4-1 despite going behind early on. Midfield player Kris Buvens equalised on the cusp of half-time and the second half belonged to the visitors with Desire Mbonabucya, Claude Kalisa and Marcos Pereira on the scoresheet.
Simons penalty
Club Brugge KV defeated local rivals Cercle Brugge KSV 2-0 on Sunday to maintain their early season form. Peruvian Andrés Mendoza put them ahead in the eighth minute and Cercle faced an uphill struggle when forward Berthe Mohamed was sent off five minutes before half-time after conceding a penalty converted by Timmy Simons. The victory follows Club Brugge's defeat of BV Borussia Dortmund in a UEFA Champions League qualifier on Wednesday and last week's 1-0 victory over 2002 champions Genk.
Comfortable victory
Anderlecht, who Club Bruges pipped for the title last year, are enjoying a similarly good start to this season and comfortably brushed aside KAA Gent 3-1 on Saturday.
Douai equaliser
In Sunday's other fixture R. AEC Mons drew 3-3 at home to R. Excelsior Mouscron. Mbo Mpenza seemed to have won it for the visitors with a late effort but there was still time for Mons defender Mustapha Douai to secure an injury-time equaliser.
Games to go
On Sunday evening R. Standard de Liège edged past Sporting Lokeren St-Niklaas Waaslan 1-0 while K. Lierse SK welcome KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen on Monday.
