Late winner
Nicolas Anelka was the City hero, scoring the winning goal three minutes from time after the visitors had twice led only to see Blackburn draw level on both occasions. Anelka squeezed the ball through the legs of Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel from a seemingly impossible angle.
Ebb and flow
German defender Michael Tarnat's fierce free-kick gave the away team the early advantage at Ewood Park, which Trevor Sinclair's 44th-minute own goal cancelled out. Lorenzo Amoruso scored Blackburn's second equaliser with his head on the hour, moments after Joey Barton had struck for City. The third round of Premiership matches will continue on Tuesday evening.
