Italy round-up: Irresistible Totti shows the way

Members

Francesco Totti pulled the strings as AS Roma climbed to the top of Serie A with a 5-0 win against Brescia Calcio.

Debut goals
Vincenzo Montella opened the scoring and debutant Cristian Chivu doubled the lead with a free-kick. Totti then stole the show by scoring either side of half-time, first with a measured strike, then with a wonderful 16-metre chip. The capital club were awarded a penalty in the last minute of the game and Totti unselfishly allowed John Carew to mark his debut with the successful spot-kick.

Trezeguet winner
Juventus FC are in second spot after coming from behind to record a 2-1 win against AC Chievo Verona. Lorenzo D'Anna gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half but Nicola Legrottaglie found an equaliser almost immediately and David Trezeguet hit the winner just after half-time.

Inzaghi saviour
Internazionale FC had to rely on a Leandro Cufre own goal to give them a 1-0 win against AC Siena, but the three points took them into the cluster of five sides with back-to-back victories. City rivals AC Milan are in that group, having beaten Bologna FC 2-1 on Saturday. Andriy Shevchenko put Milan ahead but Carlo Nervo's equaliser looked to have earned Bologna a point until Filippo Inzaghi popped up with the winner five minutes from time.

Homecoming ruined
S.S. Lazio ruined UC Sampdoria's home return to top-flight football with a 2-1 win in Genoa early on Saturday evening. Sampdoria were playing their first home game in the top flight after four years in Serie B, but fell behind in the eighth minute at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris when Dejan Stankovic headed down a cross from Sinisa Mihajlovic and Simone Inzaghi scored with an acrobatic volley.

Penalties at both ends
The home side missed a great chance to get back on level terms eight minute later when Cristiano Doni's penalty was saved by Angelo Peruzzi. Lazio, who start their UEFA Champions League challenge against Besiktas JK on Tuesday, doubled their lead four minutes past the hour, as Bernardo Corradi was brought down by Maurizio Domizzi and Demetrio Albertini converted the resulting spot-kick.

Consolation goal
Sampdoria halved the deficit 17 minutes from time thanks to a Fabio Bazzani header, but Lazio held on to maintain their winning start under coach Roberto Mancini, himself a former Samp player.

Yet to score
At the lower end of the table, Modena FC are the only side yet to score after losing 1-0 at home against Udinese Calcio. The visitors even had Alberto Do Carmo sent off for two bookable offences before finding a winning goal courtesy of David Pizarro's 82nd-minute penalty. In Sunday's other games, US Lecce beat Ancona Calcio 3-1, Parma AC defeated AC Perugia 3-0 and Empoli FC drew 1-1 with Reggina Calcio.
