England round-up: Anelka on song for City

Members

Nicolas Anelka helped Manchester City FC climb to third while leaders Arsenal FC slipped up at home.

Breakaway effort
The French striker scored two penalties and a breakaway solo effort to wrap up his treble after Juan Pablo Angel had given Villa a half-time lead and Michael Tarnat had levelled the scores with a fine free-kick.

McManaman inspired
Delighted with the most recent addition to his squad, City manager Kevin Keegan said: "I thought everything that was good about us today started around Steve McManaman." His side move ahead of Chelsea FC on goal difference and sit just two points behind city rivals Manchester United FC.

Red cards
In the day's other game, Fulham FC drew 2-2 against Birmingham City FC at Saint Andrews - and both sides finished with ten men. Louis Saha put the visitors ahead in the opening minute but Birmingham debutant Mikael Forssell equalised seconds before half-time. Fulham's Sylvain Legwinski was sent off before his team-mate Luis Boa Morte restored the lead on 78 minutes. Forsell found a second equaliser four minutes later but the home side's hopes of claiming all three points withered once centre-half Darren Purse was shown the red card.

Arsenal frustrated
On Saturday, Premiership leaders Arsenal FC were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw at home by Portsmouth FC, enabling United to cut the gap at the top to just one point. The leaders were caught out in the 27th minute as Steve Stone's cross was met by Teddy Sheringham, and the striker's diving header gave the visitors an unexpected lead. However, Arsenal were level before the interval, Thierry Henry converting a twice-taken penalty to restore parity, however they were unable to find a winner in the second half and therefore dropped their first points of the season.

Two for Van Nistelrooij
Second-placed United kept pace at the top with a hard-earned 2-0 victory at Charlton Athletic FC. The away side took the lead two minutes past the hour, Ruud van Nistelrooij collecting a deflected free-kick to score from close range. Charlton's challenge was effectively ended by the dismissal of Jason Euell three minutes later and Van Nistelrooij added a late second from Ryan Giggs's cross.

Chelsea march on
Chelsea FC's unbeaten start to the season seemed to be under threat as Frédéric Kanouté gave visitors Tottenham Hotspur FC a 25th-minute lead at Stamford Bridge. However, Frank Lampard headed the home side level ten minutes later, before Adrian Mutu rounded off a fine passing move to give Chelsea the lead. The Romanian striker added a third midway through the second period and, despite a second for Kanouté, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's late strike sealed the win.

Liverpool fight back
Blackburn Rovers FC took an early lead at home to Liverpool FC, with Matt Jansen opening the scoring in the eighth minute. However, the visitors were level moments later, as El Hadji Diouf won a penalty that Michael Owen converted, before Blackburn's Lucas Neill was shown the red card for a 13th-minute tackle on Jamie Carragher. The home side held out until the 68th minute when Owen scored again, and Harry Kewell's late third sealed all three points for Liverpool.

Penalty drama
Both sides finished the match at Goodison Park with ten men, visitors Newcastle United FC losing Laurent Robert shortly before half-time for a second bookable offence. However, Everton FC's Gary Naysmith was then dismissed in the incident that led to Alan Shearer giving Newcastle a 59th-minute advantage from the penalty spot, but the home side battled back and Tomasz Radzinski equalised. Newcastle seemed to have secured the win late in the game, as Olivier Bernard was fouled by Joseph Yobo and Shearer converted his second penalty of the game, but Duncan Ferguson earned Everton a draw with another spot-kick.

Two-goal victories
Southampton FC were 2-0 winners at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, with James Beattie scoring both goals – the first a penalty – either side of half-time, while Middlesbrough FC's poor start to the season continued, goals in each half from Kevin Davies and Bruno N'Gotty earning Bolton Wanderers FC a 2-0 victory.
