HJK Helsinki are celebrating their 21st championship after FC Haka lost on Wednesday.
Article body
HJK Helsinki secured their 21st Finnish championship on Wednesday, and a place in next season's UEFA Champions League qualifying round - without even having to put on their boots.
Haka beaten
A 1-0 home defeat for FC Haka against Myllykosken Pallo-47 ensured HJK's only challengers were knocked out of the title race, leaving the defending champions four points clear with only one match left.
'We have played very well'
After watching Haka's defeat on television, HJK captain Ville Nylund said: "We have played very well since July. Our defensive play has improved and that has given a boost to the attack as well. Of course it would have been tremendous to win the title on the pitch, but the championship is the same, no matter how it comes."
Double chance
Haka have the consolation of a UEFA Cup place as runners-up, while on 1 November HJK will attempt to complete the domestic double when they meet AC Allianssi in the Finnish Cup final. Regardless of the result, Allianssi will join Haka in the UEFA Cup.
Relegation race
At the bottom, KuPS Kuopio have already been relegated, while FC KooTeePee occupy the play-off place, three points behind FC Jokerit and FC Hämeenlinna. Jokerit's goal difference virtually secured their safety, but KooTeePee will avoid a play-off if they win their final game on Saturday against Haka and FC Hämeenlinna lose at home to MyPa.
