France's FIFA World Cup-winning squad raiseed €1.5m for the victims of May's Algerian earthquake.

Funds earmarked
Organised by Zinedine Zidane, who was born in Algeria, the 23-man squad took on Olympique de Marseille in front of 45,000 fans at the Stade Vélodrome, raising an estimated €1.5m. The majority of the funds will go to those affected by the earthquake, which killed 2,300, injured 10,000 and left 80,000 homeless. Twenty per cent of the money will be donated to firemen who were victims of last summer's forest fires in France.

Drawn game
All of the 23 players that gained World Cup winners' medals played some part in the game, including Didier Deschamps - now coach of Marseille's rivals AS Monaco FC - and the recently retired Alain Boghossian. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' putting Marseille ahead with a 50th-minute penalty, and Sylvain Wiltord equalising a quarter-hour from time.

Match explanation
Zidane said after the game: "I do not usually talk about issues which are above me, but when such a catastrophe occurs, especially in your country of origin, you want to help and I could help, that is how I thought up this match." World Cup-winning coach Aimé Jacquet added: "After the magic moments we had a few years ago, we are always very keen on meeting again. We just enjoy ourselves and do something useful at the same time."

Further reunion
It is the second charity reunion for the France 98 team, having previously been brought together last year by Laurent Blanc to raise funds for the rebuilding of areas devastated by flooding in southern France, also raising €1.5m. They will next play at FC Girondins de Bordeaux at the invitation of Bixente Lizarazu, to campaign against ocean pollution.
