Pronounced dead
The fan, 31-year-old Manuel Ríos Suárez, died as a consequence of blows he received to his liver during fighting between Deportivo fans and those of SD Compostela, from the third division. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Santiago but was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
Local police investigate
Local police are investigating the murder and other violent incidents between the two sets of fans inside and outside the San Lázaro stadium, in which eight other people were injured. It is understood Suárez was struck by a fellow Deportivo fan, believed to be a member of the 'Riazor Blues', a group of Deportivo supporters.
Lendoiro reaction
Deportivo chairman, Augusto César Lendoiro said: "It will be for the police and courts of justice to study what has happended and take the appropriate action."
'Time to take action'
Compostela chairman Juan Silva said: "I am devastated, not as chairman of Compostela but as a normal citizen. Now is the time to take action, we cannot allow these people to carry on breaking the mandates of the constitution. We are not just talking about civil rights but our obligations."
Valencia game suspended
Elsewhere, Valencia CF's tie against CD Castellón was abandoned in the 81st minute with the score at 1-1 after referee Jesús Téllez Sánchez was hit by a object thrown from the stands.
