Portugal round-up: Derlei dazzles Académica

Members

A hat-trick from Derlei ensured FC Porto defeated Clube Académica de Coimbra to remain top of the table.

Eight wonders
With the score already 1-1 after Porto's César Peixoto scored direct from a corner to cancel out Dário Monteiro's early free-kick, Derlei put Porto ahead after a 15th-minute goalmouth scramble. He scored again three minutes before half-time with a header and completed his hat-trick shortly after the break to take his tally for the season to eight goals in seven games.

Silva service
CS Marítimo sit three points behind Porto in second place by virtue of a last-gasp winner in the 2-1 home victory against Sporting Clube de Portugal. The visitors had not lost on their travels against the Madeira-based side for nine years and seemed set to extend that record when a header from Brazilian striker Liedson gave them a 23rd-minute lead. But debutant Marcelo Carioca's powerful free-kick levelled the scores just past the hour mark and Alain Silva's intervention six minutes into added time stole all three points.

Super Sousa
A late goal also came to Boavista FC's rescue in their Friday night game against ten-man CF Os Belenenses. Ricardo Sousa's 90th-minute strike cancelled out Henri Antchouet's first-half goal for Belenenses, who had Eliseu Santos sent off shortly after the break, to earn a 1-1 draw which ultimately kept them third in the table.

Flying start
Level on points with Boavista in fourth are SC Beira-Mar, who got off to a flying start in their home game against CF Estrela da Amadora. Kingsley Ekeh's first-minute goal sent them on their way to a 3-0 success, with additional strikes coming from Juninho Petrolina and Marian Zeman.

Two off
SL Benfica kick-started their season with a 4-1 win against nine-man Moreirense FC. Winger Simão Sabrosa scored twice for the visitors, the second from the spot, to help floor Moreirense, who had Vítor Pereira and Armando Silva sent off.

Home wins
The weekend's other games all finished in home victories, including Rio Ave FC defeating FC Paços Ferreira 2-1 thanks to Idalecio Rosa's 85th-minute goal which secured their first win of the season. Goals from Nuno Amaro and Jorge Casquilh gave Gil Vicente FC a 2-0 win against UD Leiria while a flurry of late goals lit up the game between CD Nacional and Vitória Guimarães.

Louzada treble
With three minutes to go, Nacional were leading 2-1 thanks to Adriano Louzada's double - but João Tomas thought his late goal had earned Guimarães a draw - but there was still time for Louzada to complete his hat-trick and Serginho Baiano to make the final score 4-2 with an added-time fourth.

Monday game
FC Alverca take on SC Braga in Monday night's game - and both sides go into the encounter knowing victory could take them into third place in the standings.
