England round-up: United slip aids Chelsea

Members

Chelsea FC temporarily went top after beating Manchester City FC 1-0 - but Manchester United FC lost.

Chelsea FC are on top of the English Premiership as they beat Manchester City FC 1-0 - and Manchester United FC were surprised at home by Fulham FC.

Hasselbaink goal
With previous leaders Arsenal FC not in action until Sunday when they visit Charlton Athletic FC, either United or Chelsea could have claimed first place. And a 33rd-minute Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink strike was sufficient to take Chelsea above Arsenal, though only on goals scored.

Fulham stun United
United would have only needed to draw to reclaim first place, but visitors Fulham moved into the top five with a 3-1 victory. Lee Clark put Fulham ahead in the third minute, but United seemed to be back on track when Diego Forlán equalised on the stroke of half-time. However, it was Fulham who thrived after the break, Steed Malbranque restoring the lead on 66 minutes and Junichi Inamoto sealed the win 13 minutes later, to inflict United's only home Premiership defeat since September 2002 - and secure the London team's first league victory at Old Trafford in 39 years.

Forssell winner
Birmingham City FC are in fourth, just four points off the lead, after beating Bolton Wanderers FC 1-0. Mikael Forssell, on loan from Chelsea, scored the only goal for the visitors 31 minutes into the game, although Bolton avoided falling into the bottom three as Leeds United AFC dropped to 18th after losing 3-1 at Liverpool FC, Alan Smith equalising Michael Owen's opener before half-time, but the home team moving away after the break thanks to Danny Murphy and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Dramatic Wolves comeback
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC were responsible for Leeds' slip down the table after a dramatic home win against bottom team Leicester City FC. A Les Ferdinand double in the first 15 minutes and a further goal from Riccardo Scimeca put Leicester into a seemingly unassailable half-time lead. But Colin Cameron pulled one back on 50 minutes and converted a penalty on the hour to give Wolves hope. Within eight minutes Alex Rae had equalised, before Henri Camara struck the winner only four minutes from time.

Ten men seen off
Southampton FC moved up to sixth with a 2-0 win against Blackburn Rovers FC. James Beattie ended a recent run without a goal on the hour, and after Andy Cole was sent off for Blackburn, Leandre Griffit sealed the three points on 87 minutes - just five points after coming off the bench for his debut. Newcastle United FC are eighth after a 3-0 victory against Portsmouth FC, Gary Speed, Alan Shearer, and Shola Ameobi the scorers, while Aston Villa FC and Everton FC remain only two points off the relegation zone after a goalless draw. Second-bottom Middlesbrough FC visit Tottenham Hotspur FC in Sunday's second match.
