England round-up: Clinical Crespo rescues Chelsea

A late header from substitute Hernán Crespo gave Chelsea FC a 2-1 win against Middlesbrough FC.

An 88th-minute header from substitute Hernán Crespo gave Chelsea FC a 2-1 win against Middlesbrough and helped them keep pace with the leaders in the English Premiership on Sunday.

Downward header
Crespo came off the bench to score the winner for Claudio Ranieri's side with a downward header that Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer failed to keep out.

Level terms
Ranieri made seven changes to the starting lineup he fielded in the home UEFA Champions League defeat against Besiktas JK in midweek and saw his side take an early lead through Eidur Gudjohnsen. John Terry then struck the bar with a header as Chelsea threatened to double their advantage - but the home side got back on level terms just after half-time through Slovakian Szilard Nemeth.

Angel miss
Crespo's late goal ensured Chelsea moved level with Manchester United FC a point behind Arsenal FC - but with a game in hand on both clubs. Juan Pablo Angel had a chance to grab similar late glory for Aston Villa FC in their game against Bolton Wanderers FC at Villa Park - but he spurned an 86th-minute penalty that could have won his side the game.

Jääskeläinen heroics
Angel had found the net on the hour to cancel out Kevin Nolan's 46th-minute opener for Bolton but saw Jussi Jääskeläinen save his spot-kick late on, leaving both sides in the bottom half with eight points from as many games.
