Simão opener
In the first top-flight game at Benfica's new Estádio da Luz - which will stage next year's UEFA EURO 2004™ final - winger Simão Sabrosa put the home side ahead in the 40th minute when his shot from outside the area was deflected into Beira-Mar's net.
Wijnhard wins it
Visiting midfield player Sandro Silva levelled matters in the 53rd minute after a goalmouth scramble. Beira-Mar then surprised Benfica's defence in the 64th minute with a counterattack that led to Dutch striker Clyde Wijnhard scoring to seal his team's first win in 22 matches at Benfica, who slipped to fifth in the standings and left the pitch to boos and whistles from disgruntled fans.
First goal
Beira-Mar moved up to third, equal on 19 points with second-placed Sporting Clube de Portugal, who drew 1-1 at home to Rio Ave FC on Saturday. Evandro Carlos gave Rio Ave the advantage over Sporting on the brink of half-time, before Brazilian striker Elpídio Silva equalised with a glancing header for his first goal of the season in the 84th minute.
Porto on top
