Boavista bow out to decisive Derlei

FC Porto striker Derlei's solitary 53rd-minute goal was enough to end Boavista FC's Portuguese Cup hopes.

FC Porto striker Derlei's solitary 53rd-minute goal was enough to end Boavista FC's Portuguese Cup hopes on Saturday.

Drought over
Derlei, who scored eight goals in the first eight games of the Superliga season, had gone a month without finding the net in a competitive match - but ended his drought in style to eliminate fifth-placed Boavista, the highest top-flight club to bite the dust in the competition's fourth round.

Late goals
Basement club CF Estrela da Amadora lost 3-1 to SL Benfica in the weekend's only other all top-flight encounter. All four goals came in the last 16 minutes of what had been a tight affair in the capital, with 18-year-old Benfica midfield player João Pereira breaking the deadlock on 74 minutes. Tiago and Roger both got in on the act to quickly treble the home side's lead and Bernardo's 86th-minute strike for Estrela proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Shock defeats
Two top-flight sides were humbled by lower-league opposition at home, Alverca Futebol SAD and Gil Vicente FC going down to Vítoria Setúbal and Sanjoanense respectively. Alverca added to their run of three straight league defeats with a 1-0 loss at the hands of last season's relegation victims Setúbal, while Gil Vicente, who have not recorded a league victory since 5 October, went down by 2-0.

Close calls
The other 12 SuperLiga sides all progressed against less-fancied opposition, although not all by comfortable margins. CD Nacional scraped past the Terceira Divisão's CSD Camara de Lobos 1-0 - a result matched by FC Rio Ave against Atlético Clube de Portugal - and SC Beira-Mar only defeated lowly SC Lourinhanense by the odd goal in five. FC Paços de Ferreira crept through with a 2-1 victory against UD Ovarense.

Easy wins
There were eight teams to progress with significant margins of victory, SC Braga leading the way with their 6-0 victory against CD Paços Brandão. UD Leiria also cruised through, scoring four without reply against Sporting Clube da Covilhã.
