Sporting had dropped to seventh in the table after the weekend matches but the victory against Paços de Ferreira lifted them five places. Barbosa's first came in the 17th minute but his side were unable to add to their lead in the first half.

José Manuel equalised six minutes after half-time for Paços de Ferreira, whose hopes of going on to claim the points were hit when Beto Santos was dismissed in the 58th minute. Sporting went ahead again in the 70th minute when Barbosa held his nerve to score from the penalty spot. The defeat left Paços de Ferreira second from bottom, with just six points from eleven games.
