Atlético get papal blessing

Members

News round-up: Club Atlético de Madrid players had an audience with the Pope on Wednesday.

Gift to Pope
All bar two Atlético players made the trip to Rome accompanied by club president Enrique Cerezo and presented the Pontiff with a bronze model of their Vicente Calderón stadium. "We could do with his help," said Cerezo, while veteran defender Carlos Aguilera described the meeting as "unforgettable".

Hadji at Hertha
In Germany, Hertha BSC Berlin have handed a trial to Moroccan international midfield player Mustapha Hadji, who is out of favour at Premiership side Aston Villa FC. The 32-year-old will spend two days with the Bundesliga club with a view to a permanent switch in January when the transfer window reopens.

Brncic no-go
Croatian midfield player Drazen Brncic, who last season was on loan at AC Venezia from Internazionale FC, has turned down a move to Dutch club SBV Vitesse. Brncic had a successful trial at the Eredivisie team last week but rejected coach Edward Sturing's offer of a contract. Now a free agent, the 32-year-old was thought to be reluctant to leave his Liege home.

Adu bound for Washington
Also staying put is American Under-17 international Freddy Adu. Adu, who is only 14, has signed a multi-year deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) - and in the process ignored offers from leading European clubs. MLS chief Don Garber said: "He's widely considered the best young player in the world and we believe that playing in his home country will further develop him as a player and as a person." Adu, who is based in Maryland, will play for DC United in Washington.

Leeds let off
Finally to England where Leeds United AFC's caretaker manager, Eddie Gray, has received special dispensation to remain in charge at Elland Road. Gray has neither the management diploma nor the UEFA Pro Licence required under Premiership rules but will be allowed to continue in his position for at least three months.
