Inter hit back
David Di Michele gave the visitors the lead at the San Siro in the 56th minute with a well-taken effort. But Cruz, who scored twice in Inter's 3-1 victory at Juventus FC in Serie A last Saturday, levelled matters with a curling shot from the edge of the area. The former Feyenoord and Bologna FC forward then struck the winner from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, after he had been brought down by Reggina's Giandomenico Mesto.
Advantage Roma
Elsewhere, a first-half goal from Marco Delvecchio gave AS Roma a 1-0 home success against US Palermo. The Serie B side failed to clear a free-kick and, after being set up by Christian Panucci, Delvecchio slotted home from close range. Meanwhile, AC Chievo Verona defeated AC Perugia 2-1 at home, with goals from Giuseppe Sculli and Ivone De Franceschi - in the 86th minute - sandwiching a Fernando Coly strike.
