Stevens sacking
The former Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Celtic FC player was given the job temporarily after the sacking of Huub Stevens earlier this month but had been thought of as a contender for the job on a permanent basis. However, Hertha general manager Dieter Hoeness decided to let Thom go following the 3-0 defeat by 1. FC Köln on Tuesday.
Tough task
Hoeness said a new coach would be unveiled at 12.00CET on 3 January, with former reserve team coach Thom's future dependent on the new man. Hertha are second from bottom in the Bundesliga with 13 points from 17 games. Their season resumes on 31 January with a tricky trip to winter leaders SV Werder Bremen.
