Charlton choke in cup upset

Members

First division side Gillingham FC knocked out Charlton Athletic FC on FA Cup third-round day.

Gillingham goals
The Londoners, fourth in the Premiership, went ahead with an Ian Cox own goal but Tommy Johnson, Mamady Sidibe and Paul Smith all replied inside the opening 35 minutes before Carlton Cole's late reply.

First-half goals
Chelsea had to twice come from behind to draw 2-2 at Watford FC and secure a replay. Claudio Ranieri's side fell behind after five minutes when Heidar Helguson's header was controversially judged by the linesman to have crossed the line. Watford goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley, on loan from Chelsea, brought down Jesper Gronkjaær and Eidur Gudjohnsen stroked in the resulting penalty to put Chelsea level. Watford restored their lead through Gavin Mahon, only for Frank Lampard to level again four minutes before half-time.

Bolton draw
Top-flight duo Bolton Wanderers FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC needed late equalisers to secure 1-1 draws against second division Tranmere Rovers FC and third division Kidderminster Harriers FC respectively. Manchester City FC and Leicester City FC will also have to replay their tie after drawing 2-2. Nicolas Anelka scored twice for City.

Ferguson double
Two second-half penalties from Duncan Ferguson saw Everton FC home 3-1 against Norwich City FC of division one, while Middlesbrough FC were 2-0 victors against second division Notts County FC. Portsmouth FC edged past another second division side, Blackpool FC, 2-1 courtesy of Yakubu Ayegbini's 90th-minute strike.

Kanouté on song
Tottenham Hotspur FC were comfortable 3-0 victors against division one Crystal Palace FC with striker Frédéric Kanouté hitting a hat-trick while Birmingham City FC thrashed fellow Premiership side Blackburn Rovers FC 4-0. In another all-Premiership tie Newcastle United FC won 3-0 against last season's beaten finalists Southampton FC.

Sunday matches
The biggest upset not involving Premiership clubs was non-league Telford United FC's 1-0 win at first division Crewe Alexandra FC. On Sunday a further six Premiership clubs are in action. Aston Villa FC play host to league leaders Manchester United FC, Fulham FC entertain third division Cheltenham Town FC while another third division side, Yeovil Town FC, welcome Liverpool FC. Finally holders Arsenal FC travel to face fellow Premiership side Leeds United AFC.
