Article body
FC Porto celebrated coach José Mourinho’s 100th game in charge by brushing aside fourth-placed SC Braga 3-0 to maintain their grip at the top of the Portuguese SuperLiga.
Quick start
The visitors - the only unbeaten team in the league - were characteristically quick out of the blocks and had the match settled by half-time. Midfield player Maniche paved the way in the 14th minute, Deco set up the second for new recruit Maciel and South African striker Benni McCarthy rounded off proceedings from close range.
High fives
Second-placed Sporting Clube de Portugal, five points behind Porto, saw off struggling AA Coimbra 2-0 to stay five points behind the leaders. The Lisbon team opened the scoring in the 42nd minute through Liédson and captain Pedro Barbosa sealed the side’s fifth consecutive win in injury-time after latching on to a long pass from Carlos Martins.
Benfica thriller
Tomislav Sokota, meanwhile, scored twice as third-placed SL Benfica overcame FC Boavista. The Croatian striker first struck in the 19th minute before Argel doubled the lead. Ricardo Sousa and Filipe Anunciação made it square before the break but Sokota tucked away the decider with half an hour to go.
Drawn encounters
The points were shared in each of the remaining three matches. Alverca Futebol SAD and Gil Vicente FC fought out a 0-0 draw while the FC Paços de Ferreira-CD Nacional and Rio Ave FC-Moreirense FC encounters both finished 1-1. On Friday, SC Beira-Mar and CS Marítimo cancelled each other out in a 2-2 draw.
Monday games
On Monday bottom club CF Estrela da Amadora made a dramatic comeback to draw 2-2 with CF Os Belenenses. A Leonardo strike and a Hugo Carreira own goal put Belenenses two up by half-time but Amadora's Brazilian striker Júlio César hit an 88th-minute penalty and then struck again in the third minute of added time to rescue an unlikely point. In Monday's other game, UD Leiria and Vitória SC drew 0-0.
