Struggling English Premiership club Wolverhampton Wanderers FC have signed 26-year-old striker Carl Cort from Newcastle United FC for €2.9m.
Summer switch
Newcastle paid more than three times that fee in July 2000 to convince Wimbledon FC to part with the centre-forward and he began repaying the club by scoring seven goals in 15 games immediately after his move. But after a frustrating period of what Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson described as "going from one horrendous injury to another", Cort struggled to make a sustained impact at Saint James' Park.
Striker confident
"I honestly think I'm capable of playing at the highest level," said Cort, who was unveiled at Molineux on Sunday. "This is a chance for me to relaunch myself. My injuries are all hopefully behind me now and I'm confident enough to think I can score in every game."
Struggling club
Wolves, for whom Cort has signed a three-and-a-half year contract, are currently languishing 19th in the 20-team division but a recent 1-0 victory against Manchester United FC and subsequent 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC suggest all is not lost for Dave Jones' side. The Midlands club's fans will be hoping Cort can make the difference.
