Hopes dashed
Madrid followed up their 3-0 home win against Valencia with a 2-1 success at the Mestalla. Any hopes of a comeback by the home side were effectively dashed when Raúl González strode on to Ronaldo's through-ball to fire past Andrés Palop on 14 minutes.
Zidane free-kick
Mista shot against a post just before the break but when his header crashed against the crossbar on 73 minutes, Francisco Xisco followed up to slot in the rebound to make it 1-1. However, Zinedine Zidane gilded the lily for Madrid by securing victory on the night with an added-time free-kick.
Alavés hold out
At the Balaídos, Celta - under the watchful eye of new coach Radomir Antic - failed to overturn a 4-2 first-leg deficit against second division Alavés. Gustavo López gave Celta hope with what proved to be the only goal in the 69th minute, a free-kick that goalkeeper Juan Pablo failed to hold. Alavés were only seriously threatened in the dying minutes, however, when Jesuli and Savo Milosevic both brushed the woodwork.
Lequi off
In the night's other tie, Sevilla completed a resounding 6-1 aggregate victory against Atlético, thanks to a 2-1 win in Madrid. Fernando Torres gave the home side a 12th-minute lead but a comeback already looked beyond them when Atlético lost Matías Lequi to a red card on 70 minutes, following a second bookable offence.
Darío Silva strikes
Julio Baptista levelled for Sevilla with ten minutes remaining and Darío Silva made it 2-1 to the visitors a minute later, with a fierce strike into the top corner. Goalkeeper Sergio Aragoneses saved Atlético further embarrassment when he saved José Luis Martí's late penalty. Real Zaragoza defend a 1-0 first-leg lead at home to FC Barcelona on Thursday night.
